Police Corruption, Fraud and Falsified Evidence

Police corruption comes in a variety of forms. For example, a police officer may accept a bribe in exchange for not reporting an organized drug ring. Or, an officer may tell an arrested prostitute – much like a quid pro quo case - that he won't take her to jail if she offers him a cut of the money she earned.

Police fraud can be big business – not to mention big news. During the OJ Simpson trial of 1995, accusations of police corruption and fraud informed a large part of Simspon's defense. The L.A. police were accused of everything from having it in for Simpson from the beginning, to evidence tampering, to outright racism.  Simpson's legal team persuasively argued that Simpson was the victim of police fraud and sloppy internal procedures that contaminated the DNA evidence.

Police corruption can involve a single officer, or groups of officers acting together. Corruption can also characterize whole police departments. While most police departments have an internal affairs division that handles corruption cases, many incidences of corruption still slip by. This is due in part to the fact that police departments operate somewhat like fraternal societies; members tend to protect each other and justify one another's conduct –whether ill or good.
